| CSOG IACR CONFERENCE 2004 |
|
When and what?
The conference proper will run from Tuesday August 17 to Thursday August 19, 2004. Registration will start at about 12:00 on the Tuesday, with the first plenary session starting at 14:00.
Prior to the conference there will be a pre-conference workshop. This will run from around midday on Sunday August 15 to around midday on Tuesday August 17. The leaders of the workshop will include Steve Fleetwood, Caroline New and Alan Norrie.Where ?Notice that it is, of course, possible to attend the workshop or the conference proper or both.
The conference and the pre-conference workshop will both be held in Girton College. Registration, lectures and meals will all take place on the Girton site.Important Information
We ask potential attendees of the conference to note that Girton College is on the outskirts of Cambridge, on the Huntingdon Road, close to Girton Village. The College is only two and a half miles from (to the north west of) the city centre. But this is quite different from being in the centre. There are various consequences of using this location.
On the positive side the conference should be reasonably self-contained. It will afford easy opportunity for attendees to meet each other.Dates for submission of outlines and papersOn the down side, the conference will be restricted (on a first come basis) to 180 people, the size of the Girton College's main Lecture Hall. Also, given the College's location, it will be less easy for participants who want to visit the town centre to do so without missing parts of the conference.
To accommodate the needs of those who want to explore the city centre but also take a full part in the conference we have arranged with Girton College for rooms to be available for booking both before and after the conference. That way attendees can enjoy the city at a leisurely pace. The price of a College room outside (and during) the conference period is £30 per night for bed and breakfast (see details under the accommodation section and on the conference booking form).
Those of you who choose to stay in the city centre (rather than at Girton) for the conference period, are warned that in addition to the high prices of many local hotels (which you will have to book yourself - again see the accommodation page) you will need to find a way of transporting yourself to Girton College. The organisers, however, are arranging cars for Girton that will leave each morning at 8:30 from the Sidgwick Site, at Sidgwick Avenue. If you would like a lift to Girton in this way you should indicate so when you register.
Girton College does have car parking facilities.
Please send one page summaries of proposed papers to the conference organisers at csog@econ.cam.ac.uk (or to Tony Lawson, at: The Faculty of Economics and Politics, Austin Robinson Building, Sidgwick Avenue, Cambridge, CB3 9DD) by the end of March 2004. Full versions of accepted papers must be received at either of the above addresses by the end of July 2004.Additional events
Throughout the summer there are evening 'open-air' performances of Shakespeare's plays in the gardens of Girton College. These are very popular with the people of Cambridge, as well as with visitors. If you would like us to reserve you a ticket for the Monday, Tuesday or Thursday performances, each of which starts at 19:30, please tick the relevant box on your conference booking form. The Wednesday night performance will clash with the conference dinner, so it is not set as an option here. It should be possible to attend on Tuesday, though, the first night of the conference proper. With a drinks reception on the Tuesday at 18:15, and a barbecue starting at about 18:45 (both within a few seconds walking distance of the location of the play), participants should have enough time to eat and drink first.Financial aidIf there is the interest, on the afternoon of Thursday August 19 (following the close of the conference), we can arrange punting trips (on which information is available here and here) either down the `backs' of the Colleges or out to Granchester Meadows, where you might perhaps choose to take a rest in the orchard.
There may be some funds available to support participants from poor regions. Applicants for such funds should send details of their circumstances, financial needs and why it is important to attend the conference, to CSOG@econ.cam.ac.uk, by the end of February 2004.
